2004 conference report

The inaugural conference of Heirnet took place in Ambleside 12th - 18th July 2004. The title was 'History Education and Society'. The first part of the conference focused on using historical sites in history education. Participants visited Hadrian's Wall, Dove Cottage - home of William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy, Sizergh Castle, Brougham Castle and Long Meg and her Daughters standing stones. The visits were led by history educators and followed by workshops on the use of historical sites in education 3 - 19. Reflections on the first part of the conference, by Nadine Fink, Philippe Harberli and Francois Audigier from the University of Geneva can be found in le Cartable de Clio No. 4 2004.

The second part of the conference began with a talk about the historical, literary and artistic significance of the Ambleside location, by Dr. Robert Woof, director of the Wordsworth Trust. Part two consisted of papers on research into the teaching and learning of history. The papers can be found on this website; some will be published in the International Journal of Learning, Teaching and Research. An article focusing on some of the papers will be published early in 2005 in The Times Educational Supplement, inviting readers to respond with replications in their own classes.

The themes of the conference were:

History and the Curriculum
History, Education and Identity
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Teachers and Student Teachers:thinking about history
Children's Thinking
Pupils' Thinking about History

Participants, who came from North and South America, South East Asia, South Africa and across Europe, from Romania and Turkey to Switzerland and Portugal, were very complimentary about the success of the conference. The organisers wish to thank all the contributors for making it so: for sharing their experiences and ideas through open, friendly and informal chats as well as for their rigorous approach to their research into areas of mutual interest and concern.

Future conferences are planned for London, Dublin, and South Africa.
